What about my free will?
One of the most misunderstood facets of astrology has to do with the matter of free will. Many assume, incorrectly, that modern astrology is merely a holdover from a medieval worldview in which one's destiny is "written in the stars" and, by implication, impossible to change ... think "Romeo and Juliet" here. The truth is that astrology in history has reflected the dominant beliefs of the culture in which it was practiced; where those beliefs were fatalistic so was their astrology. In modern times we understand that human beings have choice to make decisions within a larger framework of natural laws and events. Our choices are limited only by our capacities and our knowledge. We may not choose to die in an earthquake, for example, but unless we know that an earthquake is approaching with serious potential consequences to our lives we do not have the choice to do anything about it until it arrives. Expansion of our knowledge is essential to making informed decisions, and nowhere is this truer than in the matter of relationships. If you know in advance, for example, that attendance at a particular art gallery opening or PTA meeting or church gathering holds potential for meeting a very special person, you may decide to cast your tiredness aside for one night, forgo your favorite TV program, and make the extra effort required to make an appearance at that event -- or you may not, but at least the choice is yours. Astrology is the art of reading the potential, the trends and cycles, built in to the structure of nature and society, and of linking it to your own personal potential. It is information -- valuable information -- designed to enhance your free will, not delimit it. What you do with that information is up to you.
